Burleson
knocks out Lady Bulldogs
DENTON,
Texas - Burkburnett didn't have time to catch its breath Tuesday night before
Burleson had taken control of the Region I-4A area round volleyball playoff.
The Lady Elks (29-5) scored the first 13 points of the match and
claimed a 15-6, 15-6 victory, ending the season for the surprising Lady
Bulldogs.
Burkburnett coach Linda Richards expected every match to be a
struggle as her team would fight for a playoff spot, but the Lady Bulldogs
(19-15) pulled together despite some injuries and won District 5-4A.
"I thought we'd fight for the third playoff spot, but
individually they grew and they grew together," Richards said. "It was
a very well-rounded and close-knit team. They supported each other and we grew a
lot."
The Lady Bulldogs couldn't climb up to the level of the Lady Elks,
but Richards was proud of the effort after falling behind.
"We knew we'd have to play over our heads," Richards
said. "They are a good team and we have nothing to be ashamed of. Our kids
did a great job."
Six seniors played their final match for Burk: Julia Graham (two
kills, two blocks); Tonya Pickett (4-of-4 serves, one kill); Sarah Mills (5-of-6
hits, two kills, two blocks); Jamie Logan; Jennifer Barker; and Brittany Willson.
Richards loved the play she saw out of her three sophomores -
sisters Shera and Amy Taylor (two kills, four hits, one block) along with Diana
Walck.
"The underclassmen did a super job, and they didn't act like
they were afraid at all," Richards said.
